Walk-a-Thon

Every year, my host school does a Walk-a-Thon to fundraise for various organizations.  At the beginning of October, I had the chance to take part in the annual fundraiser in which they were raising money for the West Island Mission.  Since my CT was out of town the week of the event, I was working with the substitute who was there in her place.  I worked with the substitute to help collect money from the students on the day of, bring students out to the courtyard where the walk was to begin, and to supervise during the walk itself.  I truly enjoyed working with the school and the representatives from the West Island Mission in raising money and raising awareness about the local food bank (competency 9).  In an assembly which launched the fundraiser a few weeks before the event, a video about the need for food banks in the area was shown to help students understand that food banks are, in fact, needed for members of their community.  This assembly provided us with the opportunity to further discuss the matter with our students in order to raise the most money that we could for the food bank (competency 2).  During the walk, I had a chance to talk with staff and students to get to know them a little bit better.  I used the walk itself as an opportunity to act responsibly and professionally by continually watching the students and making sure that they were staying where they were supposed to be on the streets, and by acting in a way that students knew I was not one of them (competency 12).
